Gavin Wood

We had a talk by a student of Edinburgh College of Art who previously done the BTEC Art and Design course (The same course as I am doing) He was talking about his work and what inspired him. His first work was inspired by horror films and the show of movement and suspense just before something happened. He then moved onto how we perceive colour and goes out and looks at something and describes in as much detail as he can in a little book on what colour he sees and then takes it back to his studio and paints it on a huge canvas. I enjoyed his talk and what he had to say but I found his art about colour very boring.

David Cass

We had a talk from an artist named David Cass, he painted of surfaces like old drawers, doors, etc and match boxes. He especially enjoyed painting wave shapes onto large pieces of wood and little landscapes on the match boxes. I really liked his work and the way he did things.

Clay face

I'm in the process of making a face out of clay and then going over it with newspaper or tissue to then paint it, its not going as well as I hoped but I think its still sort of good

Linda lovett

Last week we had a craft designer in for a visit, her name was Linda Lovett she told us her journey from BTEC art to where she is now. She started started working with companies where she would do sketches for ornament moulds. She then got tired of that and made cute little craft things our of copper, pieces of China she found and was inspired by upcycling. I liked her a lot, she was inspiring.

Dolls house

I'm doing up one of my dolls houses in my spare time, this is how far I've gotten so far.I started off with painting the walls as I had small tester pots of paint which I found when clearing out my grans house after she passed, and had tester bits of carpet from b&q then bought a tile from b&q. The triangular bit I had to get some help with from my boyfriends dad and he cut and placed it in for me. I had a few plastic furniture pieces lying around (white shelves and yellow wardrobe) so I stuck them in while the small foot stools are made from bottle caps (idea from pintrest) and the sofa is clay with material glued around.

My mono printed bike

We did mono printing of a bike which was fun. We then had to draw parts of the bike and re assemble it, this was my outcome which I liked a lot

Humphrey Weightman

A graphic designer named Humphrey Weightman came to speak to us on Wednesday, he spoke about his work and what he does and passed some examples around. It was all really interesting, but not my cup of tea. He was very well organised and had a real passion for what he was talking about, which I loved, if we had the time I'm sure he would have went on for hours on end.

Sam Cornwell talk

Last Wednesday we had a photographer in for a talk, called Sam Cornwell, I found his work extraordinary! I've never really been interested by photography but his pictures inspired me. He told us different cameras he's used and told us what inspired him. But what really amazed me was astrophotography (space) which is something he is doing now. There is one picture that I really liked where he was standing at a lake side surrounded by darkness, with his iPhone light on with the northern lights in the sky. That really impressed me.

Oliver reed talk

We had a talk from an artist named Oliver Reed, who also teaches at Edinburgh University. I found his work rather interesting, and I think I remember a part where he said he didn't just paint with brushes and that he also paints with rocks to get the stone texture. He also didn't paint from just one picture, he took several pictures and used them all to create one painting for example, he would maybe take the top right corner and place it in the top left corner and take the centre point and perhaps put it to the side. There was one painting by Oliver that I really liked, it was a painting of a forest like place in winter time and the skies were cold and grey and he really looked at the parts of the trees that snow falls on and sticks, but my favourite point of the painting was the snow itself, he had somehow splattered the paint across the page to make the flake effect and it just looked really nice.
