Graham Owen - Close Up Photography

Graham Owen is an American, photographer of natural flowers and insects. He grew up traveling the world and has had a passion for nature from an early age and basically evolved from decades of experimentation.
Out of all of his portfolio, i was mostly drawn to his Close ups/Macro photography as i have found it more interesting through my own experiments in my photography unit. Though he photographs nature i find this stuff fascinating!!

I think his photographs are amazing, they show up a great amount of detail to bugs and plants that you usually don't ever think twice about, Especially in the image of the dragonfly as i feel - might just be my bad eye sight- it looks more focused than the other two. All of his images are bright and seems to use a good level of exposure and natural light.

Man Ray & The Rayograph - photography

Man Ray was an American self-taught photographer, painter, sculptor and film maker and was influenced by the movements of Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dada.
Though he regarded himself as mainly a painter, he was also a successful sought after fashion photographer, but happily moved between different forms.
 He was born in Philadelphia as Emmanuel Radnitzky in 1890 and then his family relocated to New York and changed their name to Ray in fear of antisemitism. In the 1920's he moved to Paris, France where he lived for a while but then traveled back to America, spending periods in New york and Hollywood.

He was influenced by Marcel Duchamp and would make art from anything lying about his studio. He had initially taken up the camera to photograph his work, but then started making images of ordinary objects - an answer to Marcel's "ready mades".
In 1920, Man Ray photographed a kitchen mixer and an array of objects from his dark room, he called these images "Man and Woman".

In 1921, he got on a boat to France, and his work was thriving, he still struggled to make a living. To keep himself a float, he took up Portrait photography. the writers and artists working in Paris began to seek him out, to have their photographs taken.
He has taken portraits of; Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvidor Dali and Catherine Deneuve to name a few <3,

Man Ray discovered the "rayograph" after accidentally dropping an unexposed sheet into the photo developer, he didn't want to waste the paper so placed a glass funnel, a thermometer and a graduate ontop, switched on the lights and an image began to form.

"Rayographs" are made without a camera, and like stated above, made by placing objects directly on top of a sheet of photo sensitized paper and exposing it to the light.
Man Ray had photographed ordinary items before but the unique images o the Rayograph revealed a new way of viewing things that delighted Dada poets.
I like the idea of the rayograph as its a cool quick way of getting a different perspective on a photograph.

pinhole camera - photography

The pinhole camera is a camera that captures images through a tiny pin sized hole.
It basically requires a dark box, or a can with a piece of photographic paper inside - like the Rayograph, the image is essentially.. imprinted(?) onto the paper, only, with the pinhole camera the light comes through the teeny hole and records images with the light of the sun.
Here is a photo example;

Image result for pinhole camera photos

The only experience i have had with a pinhole camera was when we got to make our own - a Solar Can- in class.. The best results occur after leaving it out for a few weeks/months. once retrieving the paper, it should have the recordings of the sunrises and sunsets with some small details of trees, buildings etc... Unfortunately i dont have an image for mine as lots of water leaked into it and destroyed any image that was there :( I've been meaning to make a new one but just havent got round to it.
The Solar Can is the same idea, just in a can... The circular-ness of the can i think makes this cool recording on the sun rising and basically tracks time.

I think these are really cool cameras and i'll definitely be making another one in a couple of weeks when i find time :)

Niel Barr Photographer - Scottish Landscape

Niel was born in Glasgow but grew up around Inverclyde and Airshire and studied Fine Art Printmaking at Greys School of Art in Aberdeen.
He bought his first camera in 2014 and initially started photography as a hobby but has since earned a load of rewards for his work, for example;
  • Highly Commended, Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2015
  • Iconic Scotland 2015 photography competition winner
  • Scotland Magazine Photo Challenge 2015 Winner
He does a ton of photography of Scotland, which was the main reason I chose him in the first place.

I like his images as they really highlight the dramatic Scottish weather with its purple hue sky and clouds to the driech and dull skies :)

Huawei P20 phone camera - photography

I've had the P20 for a couple of months now, and very quickly noticed how easy it is to take good quality pictures.
The P20 has a duel camera lens and uses "artificial intelligence" to recognise your pictures subject matter - i actually found this to recognise my pet rabbits as "cats" and my pet rats as "dogs"?
Also when taking picture with grass, once recognised it automatically makes the green super bright (see image example below)- you can however turn this feature off as its just part of the auto setting.

as well as the automatic "photo" settings, you can select "night" and "portrait" which also have automatic settings.

The "night" setting helps you take better pictures in the dark, once you hit the capture button it automatically starts brightening the image for example;

While the "portrait" setting focuses on faces and usually blurs the background, two examples;

I love the automatic settings as its an easy way for me to take images in general as well as for my online business.
Exploring other settings
While looking through everything i can do on my phone camera for this i discovered that there are 4 different light painting techniques included in the "more" section - this includes  a"traffic trails" setting, a "Light Graffiti" setting, a "Star trails" setting and a "silky water" setting. This is a new discovery for me as i'm not very adventurous with my camera and just take it as it is...
I first off played with the Traffic Trails setting with the lights on my laptop keyboard as i live in the middle of nowhere and there is no traffic what so ever. This created this kind of effect, interesting to say the least! I would love to get out in Edinburgh to use this feature for realsies though.... Can maybe attempt this in Peebles tomorrow?? We'll see :)

Moving on, I tried using the Star Trail setting, unfortunately there aren't any stars out tonight... Another thing i will be trying in the next couple of months!!! If successful i will upload this to Instagram <3
I also have not tried the Silky Water setting either.. I'll have a lookie at that in the next couple of days.. hopefully it rains!

Finally i played with the Light Graffiti setting which was fun! I switched my livingroom light off and lit some matches! only burnt myself once :)

I personally LOVE this phone and its camera. It has some custom settings eg. Aperture etc but I'm going to explore them tomorrow while its light outside :) I'll upload them to instagram and also update this blog with them

JUCO - Fashion photography

JUCO is made from duo photographers, Julia Galdo and Cody Cloud. They use highly saturated colours, patterns and textures in their fashion photography.
i selected 3 images that are interesting to me. I was drawn to the display of bright colours expecially those that used opposite colours, for example the use of the bright orange back ground and the blue jacket, because they are opposites on the colour wheel it really brings out each.

Or the use of opposite colours in this image, the dark red background and the some what turquoise hair. I enjoy these images as they just jump out of the page. I feel they are fun and exciting

This last one i chose as i was drawn to it for its warm colour composition along with the use of shadow. it just intrigued me.

I NEED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY  :O

Ken Drake - Zoo Studio Photography

Ken Drake is a pet photographer and the director at Zoo Studio with help from Beck Drake, Johnny English and Jackie Mosionek. He has won several national and international awards and has been published in different countries all over the world. He focuses on capturing the animals personality and spirit within his photographs.

I enjoy his work as he captures movement flawlessly for instance see the two photographs below.
I love his use of light with the black background which really brings forward the colours on the birds and the water splashing off of the fur of the dog.

i want to explore pet photography more in depths for this unit.
